Prone, Crawl & Advanced Cover
New prone/crawl mechanics let you hide under vehicles and behind low cover. Context-sensitive takedowns and improved blind-fire. NPC threat level changes police and crowd reaction dynamically.
Major Upgrade
Combat
Classic Third-Person Cover
Solid cover shooter for 2013 — but no prone, limited takedowns, and enemies are largely static. Combat held up well across a decade but feels dated now.
GTA V Classic
Weight-Based Physics + EV & Submersibles
Overhauled simulation — trucks genuinely feel heavier, EVs handle differently from combustion, airboats for swamps, and personal submersibles for deep water. Armour tiers degrade under fire.
Major Upgrade
Driving
Simcade with 350+ Vehicles
The most praised GTA handling model — accessible but slightly floaty. Huge roster of cars, bikes, planes, and boats. Still excellent for casual driving, less so for enthusiasts.
GTA V Classic
Witness-Based Recognition
NPCs who see a crime describe you to police — clothing colour, vehicle, direction of travel. Change your outfit and the heat drops. Cops can lose you in terrain. No more instant spawn from thin air.
Game Changer
Wanted System
Star-Based Instant Spawn
Police materialize from nowhere based on wanted stars. No disguise system, no witness mechanics. Iconic but frustrating — breaking LoS was the only real escape option.
GTA V Classic
Multi-Day Planning + 6 Crew Roles
Real prep missions over multiple sessions. Six roles: Driver, Hacker, Gunman, Lookout, Demo, Fixer. 2–4 distinct approach routes. Enemy positions shift every run — actual replayability.
Major Upgrade
Heists
Linear Setup → 3 Approach Options
Setup missions, then pick loud / smart / obvious. Fixed enemy positions, fixed payout. Great the first time — but no reason to replay once you know the layout.
GTA V Classic
Dedicated Servers · No Shark Cards · Anti-Cheat
Full dedicated server infra. No pay-to-win economy. Kernel-level anti-cheat at launch. Co-op story missions. Crew compounds that level up. 32-player lobbies. Launches same day as single-player.
Rebuilt Ground-Up
Online
P2P · Shark Cards · 30 Players
Peer-to-peer sessions, rampant modders, pay-to-win shark cards. But — 12 years of content updates, hundreds of missions, and still one of the most-played games in the world.
Still Massive
Schedules, Memory & Witness Descriptions
NPCs have daily routines, emotional states, and remember crimes they've witnessed within a session. Crowds don't just scatter — they react differently based on what they actually saw you do.
Major Upgrade
NPC AI
Panic & Scatter
NPCs react in the moment but have zero memory, no routines, and no social dynamics. Good for 2013, but predictable — every crowd reacts identically to the same stimulus.
GTA V Classic
Lucia & Jason — Bonnie & Clyde
First female protagonist in mainline GTA history. Mandatory switching at narrative beats (not optional). Estimated 50–65hr story — nearly double GTA V — with a 3-act structure across rural and urban Leonida.
Series First
Story
Michael, Trevor & Franklin
Revolutionary three-protagonist format in 2013. Michael and Trevor carry the narrative — Franklin feels underused. ~31hr main story with an uneven final act. Still one of gaming's best casts.
Iconic Trio
Gym · MMA · Fishing · Clubs · Mini-Golf · Hunting
The most activity-dense GTA world ever — plus a living ecosystem of swamps, beaches, islands, and wildlife. Weather-locked missions, seasonal events, and NPCs who react to your local reputation.
Massive Expansion
Activities
Golf · Tennis · Yoga · Triathlon · Darts
Good variety for launch year, and GTA Online added much more over time. But the base world had limited indoor activities and minimal wildlife interaction outside of hunting.
GTA V Classic
RAGE 9 · Ray Tracing · 4K/60fps
Physically-based rendering throughout. Full ray tracing in Fidelity Mode. 4K/60fps Performance Mode on PS5. Volumetric weather, real-time global illumination, and draw distances that make the map feel genuinely limitless.
Generation Leap
Graphics
RAGE Enhanced · 30fps Baseline
Groundbreaking for 2013. The PS5 Enhanced Edition added 60fps and some ray tracing. But compare a 2026 screenshot side-by-side and the generation gap is immediately obvious.

"GTA V was a masterpiece of its generation. GTA VI is what happens when Rockstar spends 12 years studying everything that came after." — IGN, 2026

Final Verdict

GTA 6 wins in 14 of 16 categories — and by wide margins in graphics, NPC intelligence, weather, and online infrastructure. GTA V remains the better value proposition at its current price, and PC players will need to wait 12–18 months for the port.

But if you're buying a PS5 or Xbox Series X game in November 2026, there's no real comparison. GTA VI represents 12 years of lessons applied to the same formula that made GTA V the best-selling entertainment product in human history.

Should you buy GTA 6? Yes — if you own PS5 or Xbox Series X. The $79.99 reflects the scope. Ultimate Edition at $119.99 is worth it if you're planning serious time in GTA Online VI.
